So every day I hear more reasons why families should eat dinner together regularly.  So many studies…so little time.  I recently read a survey that said 84% of children say they would prefer eating together as a family.

I think that dinner or at least some meal every day should be enjoyed together with our families.  I know you’re thinking that’s not even going to happen at my house.  I also know that in today’s busy world it is difficult for parents and children to sit down to a meal, but shouldn’t we?  My four kids grew up quickly, and the best thing we shared was our time.  I think we all need a paradigm shift!  Like we should all stop long enough to think about what is really important and lasting in this world.

My husband and I have always been passionate about having dinner as a family.  We started when our children were babies and just kept calling them to dinner until they were big enough to figure out it is an expectation that we have.  You think this is an unattainable goal.  So many meals…so little time.

Meals do take time.  Think about the time we spend on one meal.  Here are my steps, think about yours:
•    First, decide what everyone will eat and maybe even enjoy.
•    Find a recipe for each meal, as well as side dishes
•    Begin a list of ingredients that will be needed from the grocery store
•    Check the pantry and fridge for what you may already have or additional items you may need, i.e. bread, milk, cereal
•    Drive to the grocery store and purchase items needed (stand in check out)
•    Groceries loaded and unloaded
•    Begin cooking
•    Set table and serve food
•    Enjoy dinner together

I could write a book about each one of those steps and I will, but not today.  I did this weekly for 5-7 meals many years and it seriously took about 4 hours.  No wonder we grab fast food on the way home from a game and wolf it down in the car.  The way I see it, this is all about time.  Not so much the eating time but the 8 steps before we get to the, enjoying dinner together.

Well, this bugged me for so many years that I decided to simplify the process.  This blog is going to be my way of sharing some of the things I have learned along this journey with my family.  I hope we get to know each other better and that I can help you bring your family back to the table.

I’m planning to write weekly for now.  Talk to you soon,

Sheri
