MealEssence.com has a great recipe for Homemade Flour Tortillas.  While most people don't make their own tortillas I want to present my case for homemade!  Homemade is always the path to choose for some very simple reasons.

1.  Nutrition.  When you make something you are more aware of it's "healthy-ness."  While at the grocery store recently I looked at tortillas, comparing the different brands and varieties...all flour tortillas are not alike.  Some are higher in fat while some are higher in fiber but without fail the less they cost the less healthy they were.  When I make something myself I realize how much fat goes into it as I measure out my fat and add it.  I think that knowing is a major factor in eating healthier.  Then, I can work toward lowering some of the bad ingredients, fat, and increasing the good ones, whole grains.

2.  Convenience. Yes, I did say convenience...it is so much easier to make tortillas than it is to run to the store.  Flour, water, salt, and crisco are staples in most U.S. households.  While it may take 5 extra minutes I believe it is still convenient.  Kids love to roll out tortillas and they are easy to heat.

3.  Taste.  Homemade tortillas taste so much better than the ones I buy.  Yes, they have flavor and they're not like rubber.  If you've ever had a homemade tortilla you won't go back...the ones we buy are not as tasty!

4.  Savings.  Homemade tortillas are very inexpensive.   Store bought tortillas' costs vary greatly but usually can be purchased for between $1.29 and $2.89 depending on the size of the tortilla and how many are in the package.  While $2 isn't that much imagine making something better for about 1/4 of that.  Additionally, the less they cost the higher they were in fat at my store.  The healthier whole grain variety was the most expensive!

So that is my case for homemade tortillas and here is the recipe again, Homemade Flour Tortillas.

Take my challenge and try making them!
