Butter Frosting

  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 9 cups sugar powdered
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 count food coloring


  1. In a very large mixing bowl beat butter until smooth. Gradually add 2 cups of the powdered sugar, beating well.
  2. Slowly beat in the 1/4 cup milk and the vanilla. Gradually beat in remaining powdered sugar.
  3. Beat in enough additional milk to reach spreading consistency. If desired, tint with food coloring.
  4. Chocolate Butter Frosting: Prepare as above, except beat 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder into butter and reduce powdered sugar to a total of 8 1/2 cups.
