Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 counts eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 2 ounces food coloring red

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Cream sugar and shortening.
  3. Add eggs. Beat until fluffy. Add vanilla.
  4. Combine milk, vinegar, and food coloring in a separate bowl.
  5. Combine dry ingredients in another separate bowl and sift.
  6. Alternately add the wet and dry ingredients to your batter.
  7. Pour batter into two greased 8″ round pans and bake for 25 minutes or until done at 350 degrees.  You can also make regular size or oversized cupcakes setting timer for 18 minutes and then checking for done-ness every two minutes, do not over bake cupcakes!
  8. Cool thoroughly before icing.
