Spice Cake

May frost with Browned Butter Frosting


  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 2 cup flour all purpose
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon ground
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves ground
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 2 count eggs


    1. Allow butter and eggs to stand at room temperature for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, grease a 13x9x2 inch baking pan or grease and lightly flour two 8 x 1.5 inch round cake pans and set them aside.
    2. In a medium bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, baking soda, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger; set aside.
    3. In a mixing bowl, beat butter and shortening with an electric mixer on medium to high spped for 30 seconds. Add sugar and vanilla, and beat until well combined. Add eggs 1 at a time and beat well after each egg is added.
    4. Alternately add flour mixture and buttermilk to butter mixture, beating on low speed after each addition just until combined.
    5. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 35-40 minutes for the single 13x9x2 inch pan (or 30-35 minutes for the 2 round pans). Place the cake on a rack to cool thoroughly. Frost with desired frosting.
